NYC Interventions

IntroductionPictures

Street fixtures for public space that facilitate the odd interactions and the temporary relationships amongst passing strangers in New York City.

Project worked on while being employed at Antenna Design.

We very much enjoy wandering through New York City, sometimes without any particular destination or reason. The street is filled with people busy going about their routine or immersed in their own world.

The city consists of psyches as much as materials. From an observer's point of view, it appears to be a kind of continuous theater with everyone being a performer. Sometimes comical, sometimes tragic, often mundane, occasionally quite extravagant. We are attracted by the idea of intervening into this scene and alter people's behavior by designing things that resonate with people's obscure yearnings. Our designs act as props to make people play their part in our story.

The objects facilitate the odd actions and the temporary relations amongst strangers. The images here all show interventions in the form of street furniture/fixtures. Their presence in the particular context invites (inter)action. Our objects shift the perception and experience of the various places.
The objects reflect particular sentiments we have observed in the city. They pick up on current habits, give a new spin and encourage encounters.
